TALES OF THE YRBM 21
Seaman Richard W. Schliep recalls when a chopper went down one night when it was overloaded. It's photo is below.
Seaman Richard W. Schliep recalls an incident one night when a Vietnamese man came in thru the messdeck hall where we get inline to eat and came into the mess hall. We were getting ready to watch the movie and he had a hand gernade unpined (to my memory) and started yelling at the top of his voice. The mess deck cleared except for the 4 of us playing cards. He stepped forward yelling every 3 or 5 steps, and as he got closer two young crewmen came in from the galley door and as he raised his hand; the one crewman grabbed the hand with the gernade in it, and someone from the table that we were sitting at jumped up and grabbed a body part and escourted him outside for a night swim in the Delta.

I was a gunner + crewchief on Det 9 (1970-71) Left for the world the day
after we were hit by 75mm Recoiless Rifle. Blew the front off of one of
our birds and the other not yet hit was used to medivac a stewards mate
that got the worst of the 1st round to 3rd Surg. in Binh Thuy.
Maintenance crew said when we landed our helo had over 200 holes in it.
I'm currently serving as the President of the Seawolf Association and
would look forward hearing from you guys.

In may 1971 a special zapper defense team was assigned to protect the yrbm 21 from swimmers.
Within a week we were hit with recoilless rifle and small arms fire.
This resulted in the loss of a helo on deck, a pbr tied up along side and several serious injuries the team with their special secret gear began dropping morters on the enemy within seconds. I believe it would have been worse if they had not arrived when they did.
I have been curious about this team since then. If you have any info please let me know.

The barge on the port side with the building and the dragon over the door was the EOD team hootch.
We use to drink down there with the team and their Australian friend.
It is rumored that certain people entered the galley through the EOD barge, removed the refer door hinge screws and pigged out on lobster and the last bottle of the Matus vine rose from the EOD C.O.s stock.

The barge on the starboard side held the Last Chance Saloon. Every Sunday the mess would cook steaks and lobsters out front.

A HAL Det Huey being recovered from the Mekong River.
It went down on a scramble at night when it lost power on take off.
Dale Odem and Jake Bryant flew as gunners that flight, but everyone got out OK.
The two pilots were Ram Hawley and Terry Campbell <
