The operations that I was most familier with on the Vinh Te Canal was border patrol.
Cambodia was a protected zone for the VC and North Vietnamese Army.
Cambodia was just behind the building in the above picture.
At night boats would lie in ambush locations and try to prevent the infiltration of troops and supplies accross the Canal.

I was told that many of the troops assisting were Tawain Chinese Allied Mercenaries.
Anybody know the whole Story??

Combat Operations mostly occured at night.
Ambushes against us occurred mainly when traveling at night.
I only heard of one daytime ambush while I was on the YRBM 20.
Mines and and occasional mortor round were another story.

AN ALPHA SUNK BY B40 ROCKETS
Sunken Alpha boat
PHOTO 300
A sunken Alpha boat minesweeper north of Sam (Nui Giai) Mountain.
The account I heard was that all the crew was above deck when the rocket penetrated inside and fragged the interior.
The crew had no casualities when tossed into the Canal.

Behind the Sunken Alpha boat is an active Vietnamese Army Outpost.
The wet surviving crew tried to wake the sleeping troops there.
Amazing that they could sleep through a B40 rocket attack.

The sunken alpha was ambushed during a roving Patrol at night.
The preferred operation was to park and ambush at night.

Vietnam Unit Memorial Monument

Vietnam Unit Memorial Monument

The Unit Memorial Monument is on the Coronado Naval Amphibious Base.
The Unit Memorial Monument will memorialize all the Naval personnel
who died or are missing in Vietnam. The names on the monument are organized by
unit complete with Unit insignia. Includes support and auxillary units.

Funds are needed to complete the Unit Memorial Monument and
restore the Command Control Boat, Swift Boat and PBR displayed there.
Your donations to this effort would be appreciated.

The Last known Command Control Boat (CCB-18) has arrived in San Diego
and is displayed at the Vietnam Navy Unit Memorial Monument Site
on the Coronado Naval Amphibious Base.
This was called by some a monitor boat.
