The Canal at the Bassac River

The Vinh Te Border Canal at the Bassac River Entrance

This is the mouth of the Vinh Te Canal on the Bassac River. When I was assigned to work at an advanced base I traveled the Vinh Te Canal from the YRBM 20 on the Bassac River to Tinh Bien. I traveled the Canal on a PBR and also on a Wooden Landing Craft or Mike Boat.

The Bassac River is the major west tributary of the Mekong River. The Canal starts north of the town of Chou Doc in Chou Doc Province and very near the Cambodian border. Detachments assigned to the YRBM 20 and YRBM 16? patrolled the French-built border canal. The canal ran between the Bassac River and the Giang Thanh River connecting to Ha Tien on the western ocean along the Cambodian Border and within Vietnam. Cambodia was a protected sanctuary for the VC when I traveled the Canal.

Vietnam Unit Memorial Monument

The Unit Memorial Monument is on the Coronado Naval Amphibious Base.
The Unit Memorial Monument will memorialize all the Naval personnel
who died or are missing in Vietnam. The names on the monument are organized by
unit complete with Unit insignia. Includes support and auxillary units.

Funds are needed to complete the Unit Memorial Monument and
restore the Command Control Boat, Swift Boat and PBR displayed there.
Your donations to this effort would be appreciated.

The Last known Command Control Boat (CCB-18) has arrived in San Diego
and is displayed at the Vietnam Navy Unit Memorial Monument Site
on the Coronado Naval Amphibious Base.
This was called by some a monitor boat.
