HOW IT ALL STARTED

While in Vietnam I photographed many subjects with my Pentax Spotmatic Camera
When I returned to the USA I perhaps showed my slides to a half dozen friends and relatives.

I then stored them for 25 years.

In 1995 I purchased a slide copier attachment for my camera.
I copied all my vietnam slides to photo prints.

In 1997 I connected to Internet and taught myself Web Page HTML code.
I bought a Mustek Scanner and scanned my Vietnam photos to my hard drive.
I developed my own web page style and page art using a Note Pad editor(free) and Picture Publisher 6 (free with Scanner) to restore photos.
I worked on, developed and tested my 12 page site on my hard drive first.

THE FIRST WEB PAGES

The first web pages were just my photo album on the web
I figured that I might as well share my photos with anyone who wants to see them.
After All, they were stored in some closet for 28 years.

After Searching the Web I found that no one was doing this the same way I was.
Rather than focus on combat units, my pages focus on bases, locations, events that were seen by many veterans and on nearly forgotten support groups.
I do not know how it started but veterans began to send or email me their photos.
I posted their photos and created a email credit link for viewers to contact them.
This proved to cause numerous re-connections and even a reunion.

THE WEB PAGE TAKES OVER

Over 50 Vieterans have donated photos and stories to be posted.
Some Veterans have donated large volumes of photos or images.
In the year 2000 the Web Book went from 22 pages to over 60 pages

Many Veterans have connected to buddies and fellow crewmen through these pages.
Many Veterans have faced there past experiences good and bad.
Reunions are happening.
I am now recieving from 3 to 20 emails a day from Brownwater Veterans.
Bluewater Navy, Coast Guard, Army, and Air Force veterans (spouses, widows too)are viewing these Web Pages.
I even have email from Vietnamese and Austrailians.

THE EXPANSION IN THE YEAR 2000

Starting in 1999 I began 5 major efforts in the Year 2000

I created over 40 new Pages (about 1 a week).
I converted many pages from HTML3.2 to HTML4 for up to date browsing
I rescanned many images by scanning my slides directly using a $500 HP photosmart film and slide scanner. The increase in clarity and detail is awesome.
I created my own guestbook and guestbook archive and now display every entry I have ever recieved (Only duplicates and SPAM have been removed)
I began to experiment with Affiliate Marketing to off set my costs an possibly compensate me for the over 20 hours a week effort I do

I attended 3 reunions (Vinh Long-Las Vegas)(Gamewardens/Swift Boats-San Diego)

AT PRESENT, THIS WEB BOOK CAN ONLY GROW -
FROM PHOTO CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN THERE

WHAT IS HAPPENING TODAY (DEC 2003)
This page is still exclusively written and edited by one person.
I am Proud to provide this service and excited by the connections and healing it creates.
The emotional release veterans tell me about makes me feel I am doing some good.

I have a small backlog of photos to post. Sometimes it takes time to get the inspiration for new displays and pages.
I am working on several new pages at once. It is hard to schedule enough time.
I have less time due to a partial disability from agent orange

I still take 50 hours a week off for my regular job.
I still travel and visit relatives around the state.
I still take time to play with my 2 year old son.
I still go to Yosemite National Park at least once a month to take photos.
I still do not do enough yard work and handyman work around the house.

THE FUTURE
I am hoping for the resources to create pages for new locations.
I hope to expand exiting pages with donated images.
I have hope that more veterans will connect with their past and their lost crewmen.
I hope I can keep up with explosive expansion of this site.

I plan to keep my affiliate marketing at the bottom of the pages.
I plan to experiment with Photo Sales (by CD ROM or email)

WHAT THIS WEB BOOK IS ALL ABOUT

This Web Book is a result of a creative effort that seems to me just happened.
Once started I was driven by a compulsion I cannot explain.

It has become a place where Brownwater Navy Veterans and other veterans can jog their memories with images pertinent to their experience.
Few Vietnam books, movies, and TV documentaries can do that for me.
This site is ready to post photos specific to any Brownwater Navy location, vessel(s) or event.
My photos and donated photos are grouped to define places, vessels or events so that many who were there can re-live there experience.
Email musters and email credits have helped many crewmen re-unite.

I hope that Brownwater Navy Veterans can show their children and grandchildren what their life on the river was all about.

I hope this site becomes a home to unsung heroes in the support organizations, familiar bases and forgotten places. If your interest is in campaigns and combat units then there are plenty of other sites.
I hope this site becomes a place to find long lost friends and crewmen.
As for me, this site has been a release of tremendous locked up feelings and emotions for many who have visited it.

The photos and images that are donated in the future will make this site pertinent to more Brownwater Veterans in more locations.

Although I am learning every day remember that Seamen like me were not told very much about goals and experiences occuring in nearby missions or campaigns. I just watched and photographed what was happening around me.

SENDING PHOTOS - TO POST ON THE WEB PAGES

I appreciate any photos that define a place, event or vessel associated with the Brownwater Navy in Vietnam. I am also interested in photos of insignia , badges, or paperwork from the Brownwater Navy in Vietnam.

Any of your photos I post will be credited with an email link.

Any photos, slides or negatives you send will be scanned and promptly returned.
I have special equipment to directly scan negatives and slides .
I use Micrografx Picture Publisher 8 to do some restoration to photos. It is no longer sold but I like it better than Adobe photo editors.
The Photos I use are posted eventually and I will send a CD of all the scans I make.

Please send photos to

Please be patient since I have many demands on my time.

HOW I SCAN AND USE PHOTO IMAGES

My main photo scanner is a professional HP Scanjet 6200C.
I scan 35 mm slides and negatives with a HP Photosmart photo scanner or a Nikon Coolscan IV
      Scanning negatives and slides directly
gives much more clarity and detail.

Special Archive files at maximum dpi are 10 to 20 Megabyte in size
and are TIFF format images (Archive Quality Only)

For most photos I scan a 1.5 Megabyte TIFF format image as an master file
      (900 pixels by 600 pixels)
Any restoration is performed on a copy of the 1.5 Megabyte TIFF image
I use Micrografx Picture Publisher 8 exclusively to edit photos.

For Web ready Images I convert to JPEG format using Picture Publisher 8
For landscape oriented photos use the following formats
      600 x 900 pixel JPEG main photo ( 25%compression for 30K to 80K file )
      700 x 466 pixel JPEG framed photo ( 25%compression for a 20K to 60K file )
      200 x 136 pixel JPEG thumbnails ( 7%compression for a 10K file )

AFFILIATE MARKETING EXPENSES AND COMMERCIAL INTERESTS

!!!!! I will not sell out to the Advertising Establishment !!!!!!
!!!!! No advertising banners will ever be the first item on this Web Book !!!!!!

It costs $120 a year to host this site in addition to my Internet Service Provider fees and extra phone line charges.
It costs over 10 hours a week to update and maintain it.

I am trying to cover some of the direct costs and compensate me for my labor effort. I could be making $35 an hour designing web pages for others as I also do part time now.

At the bottom of my pages are Affiliate Marketing sales links.
When you use these links when making a purchase I receive a referral fee.
I have received about $35 from Amazon.com in the year 2000 for this effort.
I have selected Affiliate Marketing links to products I have or would buy myself.

I intend to also sell my own photos and CD roms directly in the future.
My email lists will not be sold to anyone.

P.S. I design Web Pages part time for profit.

The Unit Memorial Monument is on the Coronado Naval Amphibious Base.
The Unit Memorial Monument will memorialize all the Naval personnel
who died or are missing in Vietnam. The names on the monument are organized by
unit complete with Unit insignia. Includes support and auxillary units.

Funds are needed to complete the Unit Memorial Monument and
restore the Command Control Boat, Swift Boat and PBR displayed there.
Your donations to this effort would be appreciated.

The Last known Command Control Boat (CCB-18) has arrived in San Diego
and is displayed at the Vietnam Navy Unit Memorial Monument Site
on the Coronado Naval Amphibious Base.
This was called by some a monitor boat.
